Ok SO we have something very great here that has been used for ages as a natural sweetener. It was enough to add only few leafs and the drinks were suddenly becoming incredibly sweet. So from here the name Sweet Bush or Honey Leafs appeared. The natural sweet taste is because of to steviosides and rebausides. They are about 250 times sweeter than the succarose (the white sugar). In the last 5 years many health food/drinks/food supplements manufacturers did started using it for their products. Definitely they have gained the interest of many people who look for ways to keep their health and to improve it. When sugar is replaced with Stevia you don’t have the feeling that you have just compromised yourself – the same feeling many people get after they replace the sweet treat they want with a healthy hard raw alternative. From the 80s Japan is very advanced in the health nutritional sector being able to use 90% from the worldwide Stevia production in South Korea, China, Thailand, Singapore, Israel, SSR. This is a catalytic point where all the rest of the world gets to know the plant and introduce it to the local market. (4)

Because of the healing properties many scientist focus their research on it and they are able to find that Stevia is really helpful for many conditions. (4)

In the beginning for a long period the herb was not approved by the FDA. But it was still a very important daily component in the diet of the man in the US Army. The reports for the effects are too good, they have noticed a decrease in all the health problems and ways shorter recovery time frame than usual in the cases of injuries and health illnesses both physical and mental.(4)

There was a stage where the herb was not only “not approved” but banned. Soon before it was banned in the 1990 Stevia won a golden medal in the IX Symposium for the Diabetes Problems for the reason that it is one of the most valuable plants that are capable of rising the bioenergetical abilities of man.

According the research Stevia do not affect blood glucose or insulin response, and because of that people with diabetes can consume a diverse range of foods and comply with a healthful meal plan.

When white sugar or the dangerous synthetic sweetners are replaced with Stevia there is a big chance for a weight loss, but it is not a guarantee – it still depends on the lifestyle, diet nutrition components and the daily activities. But still the zero calorie stevia can be included in a well-balanced diet to help reduce energy intake while still enjoying the sweet taste.

Research has shown that there is no accumulation of stevia (or any byproduct of stevia) in the body during metabolism. It is because of this poor absorption in the digestive tract that stevia has zero calories and does not raise blood glucose or insulin levels when digested.

The plant has many sterols and antioxidant compounds including kaempferol, quercetin, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, isoquercitrin, and isosteviol. Studies have found that kaempferol can reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer by 23 percent.

Certain glycosides in stevia extract have been found to dilate blood vessels, increase sodium excretion, and urine output. In higher doses it is proven that stevia can help regulate and lower the blood pressure also regulate the heart beat. (3)

In 2010, the European Food Safety Committee (EFSA) reviewed the literature to determine if there was any cause for concern regarding the potential for allergic reactions to the stevia plant. The reviewers concluded that “steviol glycosides are not reactive and are not metabolized to reactive compounds, therefore, it is unlikely that the steviol glycosides under evaluation should cause by themselves allergic reactions when consumed in foods.” (3)

Since 02.12. 2011 the main sweet substance – stevioglycosides are approved for use within the EU. (4)
